{"id":1555,"date":"2013-05-20T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-20T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carnegie25live.wpenginepowered.com\/?p=1555"},"modified":"2025-12-16T11:27:20","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T19:27:20","slug":"continuous-improvement-methodology-holds-promise-for-real-change-in-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/continuous-improvement-methodology-holds-promise-for-real-change-in-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Continuous Improvement Methodology Holds Promise for Real Change in Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-9f092ff3\">\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-f749780f\">\n\n<p>In a new white paper by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching the authors have found examples that illustrate how continuous quality improvement methodology is being applied in education toward the goals of making education more efficient, effective, and equitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/resources\/publications\/continuous-improvement-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Continuous Improvement in Education<\/em><\/a>, by Sandra Park, Stephanie Hironaka, Penny Carver, and Lee Nordstrum, the authors provide examples in three broad categories: at the level of classroom instruction, system-wide, and improvement efforts with collective impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They write that while continuous improvement methodology is most often associated with industries such as manufacturing, business, and healthcare, the field of education has been slow to embrace it. Instead, \u201csilver bullets and high stakes accountability remain the prevailing levers for improving school, teacher, and ultimately student performance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors contend that this is due, in part, to the fact that \u201cschools and districts are not organized in ways that promote continuous learning; work is often done in silos, policy demands push for quick results, data isn\u2019t provided frequently or quickly enough for it to meaningfully inform and change practice, and poor outcomes are viewed as individual failures rather than a by-product of a misaligned system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors conclude that in order to make positive and real changes in education, there needs to be a \u201ctripartite improvement framework\u201d of will, ideas, and execution. \u201cCurrently, none of these three elements is ubiquitous in education, a reality which must change if educators are to move beyond the input-outcome polemic and begin to unpack the black box of educational processes in ways that promote their improvement,\u201d the authors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/resources\/publications\/continuous-improvement-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Download the white paper \u00bb<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-#-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This work was funded through a cooperative agreement with the Institute for Education Sciences.
